Met Image with Landscape in Background

The sitter holds a copy of the Homilies of Saint Gregory the Great and beats his breast. The Crucifixion is shown in the background. According to the Libro de spese (account book) of Lorenzo Lotto, the portrait was commissioned on December 9, 1546, and was completed by October 11, 1547.
